<p>But Mann&#8217;s comments about photographic technique inspire greater respect for <a title="Matthew Brady at NARA" href="http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/topics/civil-war/brady.html" target="_blank">Matthew Brady</a> and other period practitioners&#8230; they struggled mightily to avoid the &#8220;imperfections&#8221; Mann regard as stylish postmodern flourishes.</p>
